Inspiration for Your Next Home Design Project
Looking for a strong vibrant theme for your brand-new kitchen? Art deco is back and massively on trend. Find out how to make it work in your home.
Art deco has experienced something of a revival in 2018. This visual explosion of rich colours, fabrics and shapes first arrived on the scene when it was debuted in Paris as part of the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, back in 1925. Although being popular between the World Wars, it wasn’t fully recognised as a creative movement until the ‘60s. It’s been in and out of fashion ever since, but like all trends, this one has come full circle and is experiencing a massive renaissance this year, particularly in the hub of the family home: the kitchen!
If you’re intrigued by this exciting, luxury design – check out the following ways to incorporate a strong but stylish art deco theme in your new kitchen installation.
Decide on Your Colour Scheme
Before getting started on fixtures and fittings, it’s important to come up with your colour scheme, as it’s such a key part of the whole art deco movement. You’ve got two main options – either you can go monochrome, using black and white predominantly across the room, adding a splash of vibrancy in areas such as your tiling or kitchen island. Alternatively, you can fully embrace the rich tones that are synonymous with deco, opting for mustard, golds, crimson or teal shades to give you that opulent look. It doesn’t all have to be about the walls – remember that your appliances and kitchenware all add to the overall colour scheme.
One of the most recognisable aspects of an art deco theme, is the use of geometric shapes in bold patterns. Angles and space can be played with, either as a tiling design for your splashbacks, your flooring pattern, your window furnishings and of course any artwork that you choose to hang. In order to let the shapes stand out, it’s really important to reduce clutter on your work surfaces. Aim to house as much as you can in cupboards with sensible storage solutions, so that you can keep your countertops minimalist.
Accessorise to Perfection
Now it’s time to add a few accessories, starting with effective touches such as art deco door handles for your cupboards, as well as mirrors for your walls. Glamour is essential to the theme, so try and focus on a big hero piece, as well as a scattering of smaller ornaments and details. You might opt for a stunning chandelier hanging above your kitchen island, or else an oversized Picasso-style clock as the focal point of your room.
In terms of lighting, more is more, so go for plenty of hanging pendant lightshades hanging down at different heights, as well as some softer up lighting for your counter tops. As we’re in the digital era, you might want to experiment with adding some coloured smartbulbs, so you can experiment with different tones depending on your mood.
Adding an art deco theme to your kitchen is a really exciting project to get your teeth stuck into. And the best part is that it doesn’t need to cost the earth – you can pick up plenty of vintage art deco bits and bobs from antique shops, charity shops and you’ll find plenty of bargains on eBay too.
